This week, Lydia Patterson Institute was honored to welcome Bishop Delores J. Williamston of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church for a two-day visit filled with faith, fellowship, and mission-centered dialogue.
The visit began Monday, July 7, with a warm welcome at El Paso International Airport, followed by lunch with members of our team and an in-depth campus tour. Bishop Williamston toured the facilities, met with school leadership, and offered thoughtful reflections, feedback, and guidance rooted in her deep pastoral and educational experience. Dr. Cardoza provided a comprehensive overview of LPI’s mission and impact, highlighting our commitment to forming bilingual servant leaders prepared for college, life, and faithful service.
On Tuesday, Bishop Williamston explored the heart of historic downtown El Paso and visited the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC), further immersing in the region’s vibrant heritage. (Continued)

On Wednesday morning, the LPI leadership team gathered with Bishop Williamston for breakfast and meaningful conversation. Together, they discussed the challenges currently facing many of our students and reflected on how schools and churches can work together to respond with faith and compassion. Bishop Williamston then spent time speaking directly with several students—listening to their stories, getting to know their hopes and dreams, and sharing her own journey of faith and leadership. In gratitude for her visit, she was presented with a special framed gift from the Lydia Patterson staff as a symbol of our appreciation and prayers. (scroll down to continue)
Before her departure, Bishop Williamston was brought to the international bridge to witness firsthand where our students cross each day. She observed the steady flow of women, children, elders, and everyday people moving back and forth—reminding us all of the human dignity, courage, and resilience that define border life and the students we serve.
To Bishop Williamston: thank you for walking with us, offering your wisdom, and witnessing firsthand the lives being transformed at Lydia Patterson Institute. Your presence and partnership are a blessing to our community and a source of strength during these critical times.
We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church and The United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana.
